Tragedy Strikes Gulfport Easter Celebration: Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly at Family Event, Leaving One Man Dead and Two Injured Outside Jack and Florence Goldin Sportsplex
GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI — April 12, 2025
A peaceful community Easter celebration turned into a scene of horror and heartbreak on Saturday afternoon after a domestic dispute escalated into a deadly shooting, leaving one man dead and at least two others injured in Gulfport’s Orange Grove neighborhood. Authorities have now confirmed that the man who lost his life in the senseless violence was Deacon Eddie Shed, a respected member of the community and the head of security at Empowerment Ministries Christian Center.
The incident occurred around 2:05 p.m. on April 12, 2025, during a festive gathering organized by the church outside the Jack and Florence Goldin Sportsplex. What was intended to be a family-friendly celebration—with Easter egg hunts, music, food, and fellowship—descended into chaos when gunfire broke out in the middle of the event, sending attendees scrambling for cover.
According to Gulfport Police, the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between individuals connected to attendees at the celebration. Witnesses described a heated argument that escalated quickly before multiple shots rang out. In the midst of the panic, Deacon Shed, 55, stepped forward to protect others, especially the children playing nearby.
“He didn’t even hesitate,” said Lisa Thomas, a church member who was present at the event. “Eddie saw trouble and he ran toward it, not away. That’s who he was. He died a hero.”
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after multiple 911 calls were made. Deacon Shed was pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional individuals, whose identities have not been released, were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their current condition is stable.
Three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Police have not yet released their names, but confirmed that the suspects are cooperating with investigators. No formal charges have been announced, though authorities say they expect updates within the coming days as the investigation progresses.
In a statement released late Saturday, Pastor Daniel Ferguson of Empowerment Ministries praised Deacon Shed’s bravery and mourned the tragic loss.
“Deacon Eddie Shed was not just our head of security—he was our brother, a faithful servant, a protector, and a friend. He gave his life protecting others, and there is no greater sacrifice,” said Pastor Ferguson. “This church is heartbroken. Our community is heartbroken. And while we are devastated, we are also proud to call Eddie ours.”
Community members gathered on Sunday at the church for prayer and to comfort one another in the wake of the tragedy. Plans are already underway for a candlelight vigil to be held at the site of the shooting.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes also issued a public statement, saying:
“This incident is a tragic reminder that gun violence can strike even in our most cherished moments of peace and joy. Our prayers are with the family of Deacon Shed and all those affected. We are committed to ensuring justice is served and that our community begins to heal.”
Deacon Shed is survived by his wife, three adult children, and six grandchildren. He was a Gulfport native and longtime advocate for youth outreach and community safety. Friends say he was always the first to volunteer, the last to leave, and a constant source of wisdom and strength.
The Gulfport Police Department has asked that anyone with video footage or information regarding the incident call the Gulfport Police tip line at (228) 868-5959.
As this close-knit community begins to grieve, one thing is clear: Deacon Eddie Shed’s life—and his final act of courage—will not be forgotten. His selfless bravery and unwavering faith will live on through the countless lives he touched and protected.
