Kentucky Man Arrested Near Merrillville After Brutally Murdering Ex-Girlfriend Outside Health Department in La Grange, Sparking Multi-State Manhunt
LA GRANGE, KY — April 9, 2025
A disturbing case of domestic violence turned fatal has shocked the residents of La Grange, Kentucky, as police confirm the arrest of 32-year-old Oscar David Torres Alvarez, the man accused of brutally murdering his ex-girlfriend, Katherine Andrea Homez Gomez, 33. The tragic assault, which took place outside the Oldham County Health Department, ended with a multi-state manhunt and a high-profile arrest near Merrillville, Indiana.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 8, when local authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting a violent altercation in the parking lot of the Oldham County Health Department. Upon arrival, emergency responders found Katherine Homez Gomez with critical injuries consistent with a violent assault. Despite rapid response and efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports indicated that Alvarez, her former boyfriend, had fled the scene in a silver sedan before police arrived. Surveillance footage and witness testimony helped authorities quickly identify Alvarez as the suspect, prompting a statewide alert. Due to the nature of the crime and the suspect’s known history with the victim, the case was immediately categorized as a domestic-related homicide.
The Kentucky State Police, in collaboration with federal partners and the Indiana State Police, launched a regional search for Alvarez. He was finally located and apprehended without incident near Merrillville, Indiana, around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He is currently being held in Indiana while awaiting extradition back to Kentucky to face formal charges, including first-degree murder and fleeing across state lines to avoid prosecution.
Investigators have not yet released the full motive, but court records reveal that Alvarez and Gomez had a tumultuous relationship that involved past restraining orders and documented threats. Law enforcement sources also confirmed that the couple had recently separated and that Gomez had expressed fear for her safety in the weeks leading up to her death.
“This was a senseless and brutal act of violence that took the life of a bright, compassionate, and hardworking woman,” said La Grange Police Chief Mark Reynolds. “We are working tirelessly to ensure justice is served and that her family receives the answers and closure they deserve.”
Katherine Homez Gomez, originally from Honduras, had worked at the health department for nearly six years. Colleagues describe her as “a beacon of kindness,” “always willing to help others,” and “a passionate advocate for community wellness.” A memorial is being organized in her honor, with grief counselors available for staff and members of the community deeply affected by the loss.
This case has reignited discussions about domestic violence and the importance of early intervention. Advocates are calling for increased resources and protective measures for individuals in abusive or high-risk relationships.
Alvarez is expected to face an extradition hearing later this week. Once returned to Kentucky, he will likely be arraigned on multiple charges.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the fatal encounter. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Oldham County Police Department.
